Troubled American singer Robert Kelly better known in music circles as R Kelly has hired the high-profile attorney of comedian Bill Cosby to help appeal his racketeering conviction in New York.
Chicago Tribune reported that Jennifer Bonjean, a New York-based lawyer, filed her appearance in the “I Believe I Can Fly” singer’s case in the U.S. District Court in Brooklyn where the musician was convicted on sex abuse and racketeering charges last month.
Bonjean who spearheaded Cosby’s appeal of his s3x crimes conviction in Pennsylvania and helped get the actor released from prison told the outlet that she plans to lead Kelly’s appeal and post-conviction motions, which are due on Monday (Nov. 1).
This came after a federal judge ordered that R Kelly will stand trail in Chicago on child pornography and obstruction of justice charges next year.
The order by the federal judge was issued on Wednesday October 20 after the scheduled sentencing for R Kelly’s conviction in an earlier s3x trafficking trial in New York.
U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber appeared to have wanted the trial in Chicago to begin earlier, but he set it for Aug. 1 after one of Kelly’s attorneys, Steven Greenberg, said that he and another of Kelly’s attorneys will be in court on other cases through July.
