A court in the United Kingdom has cleared former Manchester City and France defender Benjamin Mendy of rape and attempted rape charges leveled against him.

Mendy who has continually denied the charges leveled against him was cleared of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape following a retrial of the footballer.

The player who has been released by Manchester United needed a retrial for the two counts and a jury deliberated for three hours before clearing him of both counts.

According to reports, Mendy was in “absolute tears” before greeting the friends that had attended the trial to support him.

A statement read outside court by his solicitors said Mendy “would like to thank the members of the jury for focusing on the evidence in this trial rather than on rumour and innuendo that have followed this case”.

They said Mendy has remained strong for almost three years since the police began investigating allegations made against him, but the process has “inevitably had a serious impact on him”.

“This is the second time that Mr Mendy has been tried and found not guilty by a jury. He is delighted that both juries reached the correct verdicts.”
