Swiss newspaper apologises for describing Okonjo-Iweala as ‘grandmother who will be taking over as WTO DG’

A Swiss-based online newspaper known as az Nordwestschweiz has apologised to Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for describing her as ‘the grandmother that will be taking over as the new Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO)’ in one of their recently published articles.

The apology was contained in a communique issued on Thursday by the Editor-in-Chief of the online publication, Samuel Schumacher, who said that the headline which sparked angry reactions from readers was ‘inappropriate and unsuitable’.

Okonjo-Iweala who acknowledged the apology from the online tabloid said that she was thankful that Women Leaders and 124 Ambassadors in Geneva signed a petition calling out the racist and sexist remarks by the newspaper.
