Court confirms Uzor Kalu stole over N7bn from his state

12 years after a back and fourth legal battle started, Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu has been found guilty of stealing N7.2 billion from the coffers of Abia State while he was governor between 1999 and 2007, according according the ruling of a Federal High Court, Lagos on Thursday.

The nation’s anti-graft agency, EFCC, dragged Kalu, his commissioner of Finance, Jones Udeogo, and a company, Slok Nigeria Limited on a 39-count charge of fraud and money laundering for which the two men were convicted 12 and 10 years in prison respectively, while the company was ordered wound up and it’s properties forfeited to the Federal Government.

In the course of his long trial, Kalu joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), became one of the loudest praise singers of President Muhammadu Buhari. He also contested election on the platform of the APC and was elected to represent his Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
