The organisers of the Tokyo Olympics in Japan have confirmed that the first resident of the Olympic Games Village has tested positive for the dreaded Covid-19 disease, on Saturday.

However, the chief of the Tokyo Olympics tried to reassure “worried” athletes as the Games Village was hit by its first coronavirus case, six days before the pandemic-delayed event opens.

“In the current situation, that positive cases arise is something we must assume is possible,” said Toshiro Muto, the CEO of the Tokyo organizing committee.

The said individual is described vaguely as a “games-concerned personnel” who is not a resident of Japan. The individual will now have to undergo a mandatory self isolation period of 14 days according to the Olympic Games organizers.

According to another news agency, at least 15 people have tested positive for coronavirus, including the first case — a visitor from abroad — at Tokyo Olympics athletes’ village, the organisers said. The rest are two members of the media, seven contractors and five members of the Games personnel.

“There was one person in the Village. That was the very first case in the Village that was reported during the screening test,” Masa Takaya, spokesman for the Tokyo organising committee, told a press conference.
