Our Duke has gone mad again… Edgar cautions against vilifying Tinubu despite losing his chance of ‘immortality’

Opinion article by Duke of Shomolu, Joseph Edgar

As the results trickle in, we may be witnessing the end of an era.

The Bola Ahmed Tinubu era is coming to a final end. We had said that what really counts was his performance in Lagos.

Even if he wins the whole of Nigeria and loses Lagos, his aura would have been demystified.

What we saw yesterday has made the claim come true. LP trounced APC in many strategic places, and APC may need to rally in their strongholds in places like Shomolu, Ikorodu, and Alimoso to bounce back.

Throwing in violence and thuggery only served to worsen the APC case and further strengthen resistance.

For me, I had said that Asiwaju had lost the chance of immortality by jumping into this race.

He would have been named the Father of Modern Nigeria instead of struggling with LKJ as father of Lagos State.

He would have kicked out a sitting president and installed two presidents and attained the levels of Awo, Zik, and Sardauna of Sokoto.

But he threw himself into the race. A race that has diminished his stature and thrown him up as an object of ridicule as a result of the scandals and gaffes that followed him on the campaign trail.

However, I want to say something here very clearly because as Nigerians we are usually very forgetful.

No matter what, BOLA AHMED TINUBU Still remains the single most influential Nigerian that has lived in recent times.

We must not forget his fight against the tyranny of the military during June 12.

We must not forget all of his activities and contributions to national life.

His work in Lagos, although not totally accepted, has continued to ensure stability, smooth transition, and economic growth.

I will be the last to throw rotten tomatoes at such a great Nigerian because he made the mistake of wanting to serve at the highest level.

Win or lose, Asiwaju remains a strong actor in my books. Demystified or not, Asiwaju remains one of the greatest Nigerian heroes since Dr Azikiwe.

I respect him as a Democrat. I respect him as a national builder, but like all great men and like the proverbial Samson, he has allowed the Delilah of his personal ambition to lead to his hair being cut.

I beseech the great Jagaban to call his boys to order violence, especially ethnic driven ones, can only further smear his good name and image.

He should accept whatever results that are coming out and take the same as the voice of the people.

If at the end of the day, he is announced President which I doubt, we will all troop out to support him but if not which is most likely, he should take it like the statesman that he is.

Lastly, I will not join anybody in vilifying the image of the Asiwaju, for he has done noble and will still do more for Nigeria no matter how this pendulum swings.

God bless you, sir, and may you live long for us
