Popular Juventus FC and France midfielder, Paul Pogba, has been slammed with a four year ban after failing a drug test, with his football career now in doubt.

Following Juventus’s opening match of the season against Udinese, the 30-year-old tested positive for testosterone. On Thursday, the Italian anti-doping prosecutor’s office handed down a heavy sentence, according to La Repubblica.

Pogba’s attorneys had turned down a plea agreement in an attempt to obtain their client a reduced sentence, arguing that Pogba had inadvertently consumed the material that resulted in the positive test.

The soccer star’s defense was not accepted by the prosecution, though, and as a result, he was handed a ban that might terminate his career.

Pogba will turn 31 next month, which means he won’t be eligible to play again until he’s close to 35.

The footballer will, however, file an appeal against the ruling of Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal (Nado), according to BBC Sport.

It is known that Pogba thinks he accidentally took any prohibited substances.
