A court in Spain has sentenced former Barcelona FC and Brazil defender Dani Alves to four and a half years in prison after he was found guilty of s3xual assault.

Sky Sports reports that Dani Alves was found guilty by Catalonia’s top court of s3xually assaulting a woman at an upscale Barcelona nightclub early on New Year’s Eve in 2022.

This month’s three-day trial culminated in a decision by a three-judge panel in a Barcelona court. Throughout the trial, Alves, 40, denied any misconduct. He has the right to challenge the ruling.

The victim claimed that Alves had s3xually attacked her in the restroom of a posh Barcelona nightclub early on December 31, 2022, and the court determined this to be true.

Alves’s accuser’s attorneys wanted a 12-year sentence, but state prosecutors had asked for a nine-year term. His defense requested his acquittal or, in the event that he was found guilty, a one-year term along with €50,000 (£43,000) in damages for the victim.
