Two traders feared killed in Bayelsa by stray bullets as rival cult groups clash

The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the death of two traders who were killed by stray bullets at the popular Swali Market in Yenagoa, the state capital, following a clash involving suspected rival cult groups.

The incident was confirmed on Tuesday by the spokesperson for the state police command, Mr Asinim Butswat who revealed that two other victims, who sustained gunshot wounds, were receiving treatment in hospital.

According to Butswat, the gun duel by the rival cult groups threw the market into chaos as traders, customers and passers-by ran in different directions, while some shops were looted and cash stolen.

He stated further that the state police command had yet to ascertain the names of the rival cults, stating, “It was a rival cult clash. Two persons died, while Emmanuel Akpaye and Chinedu Offor are responding to treatment at the Federal Medical Centre.”
